Heritage
Alfred Bem
Born in 1886 · literary scholar and critic

My great-grandfather's cousin studied Russian literature and taught in Prague. For me, his work represents careful reading: understanding grows from specific observations that can be discussed and checked.
Working with texts
He entered St Petersburg University in 1908 and graduated in 1912, then worked with manuscripts at the Academy of Sciences library. From 1922 he lived in Prague, taught at Charles University and led the Skit Poets group and a Dostoevsky seminar. His studies examine reading, literary relationships and polemics.
The method of small observations
Alfred Bem called his research approach the “method of small observations”. He returned to the work itself and examined its details closely: a particular word, a repetition, a character’s name, a resemblance to another text. An understanding of the whole grew from these observations.
My approach in SpektrArt echoes this principle: an observation should have a location in the work — a quotation, a frame or a timestamp that we can return to and check as the basis for a conclusion. Interpretation and the final judgment remain with the person.
On the method: M. A. Vasilyeva, “The problem of the double in the work of the Prague Seminar for the Study of Dostoevsky: Open Space” · S. A. Skuridina and N. B. Bugakova, “A. Bem’s method of small observations as a basis for the study of literary onomastics”. VSU Bulletin. 2022, no. 4, pp. 60–63.
